三、阅读（第九课）Success
Success has many layers and many definitions. We generally think of success in broad terms. When a person is successful, we seldom ask what that means, what success and whether that is the kind of success is “all in your head.” However, everyone’s definition is different, because ideally we will set goals that are appropriate for ourselves. The best definition of success will involve what matters most to us not to others.
You may be surprised to find that success is not only temporary but also relates to failure. We achieve, and then we find ourselves looking t the next step. Some steps that don’t work might be considered failure, but they are temporary as well. Some people, when they face setbacks, say, “This is never going to work.” Or “I’m a failure.” Part of success is dealing with failure, and we recognize that no one has the time, energy and interest to “do it all” to become proficient in every area.
Failure often causes reassessment of goals, greater striving, and hence greater success. Most successful people admit they have had some “good luck” that helped them along the way. Chances are that they have had “bad luck” too. They have made some mistakes, but they were not defeated. Success most often comes to those who set realistic and reasonable goals and to those who work hard persistently and with enthusiasm, without giving up when things go wrong. These are the keys to success for everyone.
Some people see success as a secure niche. They will occupy it when they are finished with the hard work of achieving and changing. But we are all in transition and are often required to meet new challenges and draw on new abilities. So, goals appropriate at an earlier age fall by the wayside as we acquire new skills, as our values become more certain or as our experience opens up new horizons. In this way, what we view as a great and exciting success today may fall into a more modest perspective later in life as we move toward greater maturity and fulfillment, which means our definition of success changes as we grow.
It may seem surprising that some people are afraid to succeed. Success brings more responsibility and higher visibility. It leads others to expect them to keep performing well. Success requires continued effort to get there, to stay there and to continue growing. The person who accepts failure, however, no longer has to keep trying. Failing can be a way to exert independence against the real or imagined demands and expectations of others.
